Match Report
14 April 2019 / Team News

Fantastic game in memory of Shaun Lewis (Cwmllynfell RFC).

In brilliant sunshine with a cold wind blowing across the field both teams served up a game of open rugby that any one would have been proud to play in. A minutes applause was held in the top left hand corner for Cwmllynfell scrum half Shaun Lewis who triadically passed away last weekend, it was fitting to in this corner because that was where he scored his last try for Cwmllynfell RIPShaun.

Cwm kicked off down the slope and with the wind slightly favouring them the soon put us under some pressure but we weathered the storm. After eight minutes we gave away a penalty with which Cwm took the lead, but we soon got back on level terms with a penalty from outside-half Nathan Healy. Just after this we lost Rhodri Milsom to a ankle injury and we had to reshuffle our backline around and put Marcus Atyeo on the wing. With both teams throwing the ball around but both teams defended as if their lives rested on the outcome. We were unlucky on a couple of occasions not to have scored but the referee Mr Colin Phillips having a excellent game ruling that we did not ground the ball and a couple of final passes not finding a man. Cwm then regained the lead with another penalty. With the half coming to a close we won a penalty for offside under the posts for a easy 3 points but number 8 Steffan Williams took a quick tap and the ball was fed across the line for blind side flanker Molly Jones to score a unconverted try. that left the half time score at 8 pts to 6 in our favour.

We kicked off and should have scored straight away but a dropped ball was cleared up field by Cwm and from a scrum close to the line they shunted us forward a scored a try and conversion to lead 13 pts to 8. Straight from the kick off Cwm kicked up field and a wicked bounce fell into their full backs hands he fed a supporting player who crossed under the posts for a easy conversion. what a three minute turn around 20 pts to 8 down. This spurred us on and we set up a ruck 25 meters out and centre Steffan Hnatiuk burst away from the ruck to score under the posts without a hand put on him and Healy converted this left us 5 points behind.

The next score was ours again when powerful scrum half back from his farming duties broke away to score one of his typical barnstorming runs to score but in the difficult wind Healy missed the conversion. Both teams were still playing positive rugby and from another good attack we regained the lead with a try when Howells again burst through and popped the ball up to supporting fullback Josh Thomas who scored under the posts Healy converted and that put us up by 7 points.

But Cwmllynfell hit back with a converted try of their own to tie up the scores, what a game you could not take your eyes off it end to end good rugby a credit to both teams. going into the final minutes and a forward drive by us resulted in Steffan Williams crashing over in the corner for a unconverted try 5 points in the lead again. And from another attack we went for the line got tackled short and in our excitement we knocked on with overlaps on both sides. Cwm then won the scrum and moved up field and again they crossed for the final try in the #SL9 corner the conversion which would have won them the game was missed. We restarted the game but could not find the final score.

All the best to Cwmllynfell for the rest of the season in your quest for promotion in which you can't afford to slip up with Bryncethin and us close behind you.

Congratulations to wing Alun Tamlin in your 100 th game for the club.
