HARD FOUGHT VICTORY OVER LOCAL RIVALS.

At last we had rugby back at Ynyscorrwg park in this turbulent season. Both us and Pontrhydyfen are struggling with playing numbers where a couple of games have had to be cancelled. With a strong wind blowing across the field Glyncorrwg kicked off but with some rusty players on both teams the early handling was poor with both teams dropping passes in adventageous positions. After only a couple of minues the referee give a penalty against us but a Ponty player spoke out of line so he reversed the decision but the player then said something to the ref so he gave him a yellow card but he carried on the argument and the the referee changed the colour of the card to red. From the resulting penalty Adrian Shearan scored from the half way line with the kick being held up in the wind just crossed over the bar. After this both teams give everything they could but again with the wet ball and strong wind both teams were guilty of poor handling. After some 10 minutes of the game Ponty levelled the scores with a penalty in front of the post by their outside half Kian Warlow who has turned out for us on permit a couple of times. We then lost Shearan for a high tackle but Warlow missed a easy pen. We then got some territory in the opponents 22 and from a strong scrum we won a penalty and Alun Newell who had a good game at 10 put us in front 6pts to 3. With both teams being evenly matched and both defences tackling well not a lot of chances were being created, our outside centre Leon (Meats) Jones was probably the best tackler on the field and he pulled off a couple of good cover tackles. With the half coming to a close we extended our lead with another penalty from Newell to lead 9pts to 3 at the break. The second half kicked off with us attacking the river end of the field and we began to get a foothold in the Ponty 22 and with a strong scrum it looked like they may crack but they held firm. We attacked up the left hand touch line and we looked to have scored a try by our fullback Gareth Evans but the referee ruled it out said he was short of the line. With both teams trying their best the game looked like it would end at 9pts - 3pts but from a penalty in the Ponty 22 which they took quickly their replacement flanker raced away and with good support the scored a very good try but failed with the conversion. We then managed again to put some pressure on the Ponty line and from a series of penalties which we decieded to scrum the referee run out of patience and awarded us a penalty try which put us two scores clear with 6 minutes left.Ponty did try their best to close the gap but runout of time. With some good performances from all the stand out players for us were Newell who's kicking controlled the game and Jones who tackled well through-out deserved the praise.

Next game will be Cefn Cribbwr away on the 4th March where we will face our ex captain Jonny Howells, all support welcome.
