BRAVE DISPLAY

We travelled to play top of the table Porthcawl on their South Road ground and put in a very brave and determined display. The day was grey and overcast and Porthcawl kick off. After only 30 seconds we lost captain Nathan Down to the sin bin in a very strange descison than confused everyone bar the referee when Nathan slipped over and his leg caught a Porthcawl player as he run passed him. Porthcawl were getting the better of the early exchanges but some stout defending kept them out. After 20 minutes Porthcawl kicked through and it looked as if we would clean up but a stray pass missed our covering backs and the home number 7 kicked through to score under the posts for their outside half to convert. Both teams played some good rugby but it looked as if Porthcawl would extend their lead soon has our defence creaked. From a rare attack into the home half a wild pass by us was gathered by the home wing who raced through to score a try which again was converted. Porthcawl continued to attack and from one we lost full back Ben Evans to a yellow card when he deliberately slapped down a try scoring pass, it should have been a penalty try but the ref said there was cover. That left the score at 14 points to nil at half time.

Whatever the coaches said at the half time break i would like to know because we were a different side in the second half. Our forwards took the game to Porthcawl and we camped in the home 22 all second half. Gareth Kingman came on for Ben at fullback, Lee Morris for Jay Whelan and Steven Lewis for the injured Keenan Thomas who had a storming match where he turned over numerous balls and won a lot of penalties and Jake Price on for Rhys Milsom. We battered the home try line and it looked as if Stefan Williams scored but the ref said held up. And from another surge Gareth Kingman crossed for a try (that's 126 trys for the club) but Alun Newell missed the conversion. We kept battering away for a score that would give us a well deserved bonus point but it was not to be.

Next week we travel to Baglan for a 2-30pm kick off all support welcome.
