After a month without rugby what a day to get back into the grove with the worst conditions i have ever witnessed. We travelled up to Cefn Cribbwr in a howling wind and driving rain and it was some miracle that we played out a full game. Credit must be given to both sets of players and referee for it. Also credit to the space crowd that braved the elements i watched from the clubhouse (coward that i am ). We kicked off with the wind at our backs but we did not use it that well we tried to play an open game but with these conditions the ball was spilled on a number of occasions. we had the better of the first 20 minutes and took the lead with a well struck penalty by Nathan Healy, but Cefn were soon on level terms with a short range penalty themselves. The second period of the first half Cefn then got on top and put us under some heavy pressure with a very solid scrum but we held out well and with some strong defence the score stayed at 3 points each at half time. And with that wind it looked as if we would be under pressure for the second half.
Cefn started strong and took the lead early through a well taken try from a scrum by their No.8 Gillard but the conversion was short which was a surprise in that wind. we then got back on the attack and won 2 penalties which Healy missed it was not the day for goal kicking. . We then made two changes bringing on burly Centre Rhodri Milsom and second row Jack Newberry-Wall and along with Cefn losing a couple of players through injury we began to get well on top. We began to keep the ball tight and go more direct and from a couple of forward drives we were awarded with a try by number 8 Steffan Williams who took a quick tap and charged over for the third time of asking the ref gave it but Healy missed the conversion. From the kick off we were given offside in front of the posts and Cefn converted to lead by 1 point. But this was the last time that they would visit our red zone and we then scored another try from Jonathan Howells which Healy converted and we never looked back. We then introduced the remainder of our subs and we had taken the game away from our hosts. With 10 minutes to go we scored our third try by replacement Steven Lewis after some good approach work he crossed out wide but the conversion was missed into the fierce wind. Lewis was unlucky not to score a second try but in the mud he fell with the line at his mercy. Into the final couple of minutes with us back on the attack the ball found Milsom who broke a couple of tackles to score under the posts for Healy to convert. This win keeps us in second place on the same points as Cwmllynfell who have score more trys than us.
No game next week but we are Home on 29th December to Pontycymmer kick off is 2-30pm. All support welcome. The players and committee would like to thank you for your support so far and wish you all a very merry Christmas and happy New Year.
