Back on top.

We welcomed Maesteg RFC for only their second ever league visit to Ynyscorrwg Park. In the team Maesteg fielded 3 ex Glyncorrwg players in our record points scorer Gareth Goodridge with 1,675 points, Prop Jay Whelan and wing Kynan Thomas. This bonus point win was made all the more sweeter when the news filtered through that Cefn Cribwr had beaten top of the table Bryncethin by 28pts to 14, that result puts us back on top by 4 points and 1 game in hand.

We kicked off playing towards the river and after five weeks off we looked rusty and our visitors had more of the early possession but we began to get more into the game. We had a couple of chances to score out wide but some good defence kept us out and we gave away easy penalties so Maesteg could kick themselves out of trouble. We then took the lead from a penaltly by Nigel James (our first penalty of the season).  Maesteg should have registered their firs score of the game fro a easy penalty but the normally reliable kicker Goodridge missed it.

We then began to get a lot of possession and from a attack down the left hand the ball was transferred to Centre Gareth Kingman to score a unconverted try. The rest of the first half was us mostly on the attack and we scored our second try by number 8 Steffan Williams from a scrum close to the line Stef picked up and drove over for a unconverted try. We had complete dominance in the scrum at this stage. That score gave us a 13pts to nil half time score.

Straight from the kick off we scored our third try, a clearance kick was charged down and lively wing Josh Thomas picked up the ball made good ground fed a supporting player  who then gave it back to him Josh then gave a good pass to fellow wing Luke McDonnell who crossed for a fine try which again went unconverted.

We scored our fourth and bonus point try after a good forward drive on the right after a few rucks flanker Daniel Richards cross for his try and James added the conversion from a big cheer from the home support. Just after this Maesteg lost the plot a little when two players in quick succession back chatted Referee Mr Robert Mota who had a great game. This setback seemed to galvanise Maesteg and they put up a real fight and never gave in.

Going into the final quarter and our visitors back to 15 players we scored our fifth try of the game through Gareth Kingman his second of the game which again went unconverted. With time running out and the light fading fast Maesteg scored a consolation try through their big second row Gavin Ronan who drove over from a ruck close to the line which went unconverted.

Next Saturday host Cefn Cribwr at Ynyscorrwg Park kick off 2-15pm PLEASE NOTE THE EARLY KICK OFF TIME. A support welcome we know this will be a very hard game we narrowly beat them in Cefn 19pts to 13 a converted try from the play of the game.
