We travelled up to Merthyr Tydfil to play Cefn Coed RFC the Welsh Rugby Union cup Division 4 group with both teams unable to progress though to the knockout stages. After some late withdrawals from the squad we had just 16 players and they fought gallantly to the end.
We welcomed back captain Jonathan Howells back for his first game back and also welcome new Hooker Anthony John ex Hendy RFC and he looks a very good player.
Cefn took the lead with a try after a good move in their back line a lead which we cut with a penalty from number 10 Adrian Shearan. With our pack going well we put some pressure on the home defence but we failed to brake down their defences. We then gave another try away which they again converted for a 14pts to 3 lead. But there's something this team of our will do is not give up we then got our first try after some pressure in a scrum we won the ball number 8 Stork picked up went left got stop recycled the ball then we went right Jonny drove for the line got stop we then move it left then Stork in the move again drove for the line and before he could be tackled gave the final pass to second row Jack Newburry-Wall to score his first senior try but the conversion was missed to leave the score at half time14pts -8 in Cefn's favour.
In the second half Cefn then score a unconverted try to extend their lead to 19-11 and from another attack with a kick and chase they get a penalty try to lead 26-11, but like i said earlier in this report these boys do not give up. With our pack on top we put a lot of pressure on their line and score a try through our flanker Diddy Richards. We then believed that we should have scored in penalty try when we went on the attack a kick and chase by fullback Connor it looked like the same scenario has the penalty try awarded against us but we were only awarded a penalty. With the game going into the last five minutes and us camped on our opponents line and after a couple of scrums went down we won a penalty try which left us 1 point behind, From the restart we managed to work our way back up field but turned the ball over for Cefn to put the ball into touch and win the game.
With numbers being down we started the game with our burly No. 8 Nathan Williams on the wing he would have made the great Johah Loumu look small and Nathan acquitted himself well and made a few big big hits on some of their players and they felt them.
